Maruti Suzuki is looking at introducing strong-hybrid technology across its entire model range, beginning with a new compact SUV (Maruti’s version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder) that’s set to take on titans such as the Hyundai Creta.
C V Raman, Chief Technical Officer, Maruti Suzuki India stated in a report, "In the next five to seven years, every model will have some element (of green technology) or the other. There will be no pure petrol powertrain across the range.” Raman also added that having strong-hybrid powertrain options for the entire model lineup is one of the options being considered to avoid pure petrol cars.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki already incorporates mild-hybrid technology in models retailed through its Arena and Nexa outlets, which includes cars like the Ertiga, XL6, Ciaz, S-Cross and the recently launched 2022 Brezza. The current mild-hybrid technology in these models is limited to handling the engine’s idle start-stop function and providing mild torque assist.
For the strong-hybrid SUV in the works, the power unit will be the 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid found in the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The unit makes a combined 116PS and is paired to an e-CVT that distributes the power to the front wheels.
Maruti will also offer its 103PS 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine alongside it and should also offer it with an all-wheel drivetrain like its Toyota counterpart.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s covers are already off and it is expected to go on sale around early September. Maruti is slated to unveil its version of the compact SUV on July 20 with a simultaneous launch with its Toyota counterpart.
Prices of the models could start from the Rs 9.5 lakh (ex-showroom) mark and they will rival models including the Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, and the MG Astor, aside from the Hyundai Creta.
