Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala unfortunately couldn’t build on his 2nd place grid slot, finishing 5th in the feature race of round 10 of the FIA Formula 2 World Championship at Sochi, Russia. His teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda also couldn’t convert his pole position and finished 2nd at the line.
Daruvala lost 2nd place off the line to Mick Schumacher, not helped due to the Indian driver starting on the dirty side of the track. That said he was keeping the top two on their toes in the first stint with an overtake attempt on Schumacher. After the race reached a stalemate, Daruvala opted to pit early to get the jump on the top two runners.
Despite that 2-lap undercut, Daruvala not only lost time to the top 2, but also lost 3rd to Callum Ilott. Eventually, the Indian driver dropped to 5th and stayed out till the chequered flag. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda also dropped to 2nd in the end, hinting that both Carlin cars were struggling with the medium tyres in the second stint.
There is some consolation for Daruvala as he will start 4th for tomorrow’s 123km (21 laps) or 45-minute sprint race, due to the top eight finishers from the feature race slotting in a reversed grid order.
The sprint race will commence on Sunday at 1:25pm (IST) and will be streamed live on the official F1 YouTube channel.
