Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala’s hopes of another podium came to an unfortunate end as the Indian driver was taken out of the sprint race of round 11 of the FIA Formula 2 World Championship at Bahrain. It was a similar fate for his teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda as an early puncture relegated him to 15th in the end to cap off a nightmare end to Carlin’s race weekend.
A great start from 6th on the grid (due to finishing 3rd in Saturday's feature race) propelled Daruvala right up to 3rd place after the first lap and well placed for a podium finish. While Daruvala dropped a place a little later on, he was showing good enough pace and was playing the long-game since the sprint race doesn’t require a mandatory pitstop.
Unfortunately, lap 8 of 23 spelt the end of Daruvala’s podium challenge as he was punted out of the race by championship contender Callum Ilot at turn 10. It was an extremely unfortunate end to Daruvala’s best race weekend of the season.
That said, Formula 2 will be returning to Bahrain next week for the season finale. So there’s still a chance for Daruvala to continue his good run of form. F2 will utilise the shorter layout which is a complete unknown for the drivers. The season finale will resume on December 4, with free practice starting at 5:35pm IST.
