The 2024 round of the Indian MotoGP (IndianOil Grand Prix of India) has been cancelled, and it’s not due to what you think. But there’s a silver lining: MotoGP will return to India in 2025, as decided by Dorna, Fairstreet Sports, and the Uttar Pradesh government.
BharatGP 2024 was in a lot of turmoil ever since the 2024 MotoGP season began. Things seemed positive a couple weeks ago but alas, We now have confirmation that the race, that was to be held at the Buddh International Circuit in September, has been moved to March 2025. Pushkar Nath Srivastava, CEO, Fairstreet Sports, has explicitly clarified that this is not due to the issue of non-payment of dues to Dorna.
Rather, the reason for rescheduling the Indian MotoGP is far more human. The inaugural round of Indian MotoGP was held in September 2023 and here are all the crazy moments from it. That race weekend had temperatures going as high as 40 degrees Celsius, which many described as unconducive for racing. Add to that the infamous air quality of the region.
Srivastava further stated, “All the stakeholders including Dorna agreed that the September weather is not conducive for the race and it is tough on the riders and marshals as experienced last year,.” adding, “we also expect more fans to turn up in March as the weather will be better."
As of now, the September 2024 MotoGP race has been moved to Kazakhstan’s Sokol Circuit. While the rescheduling of the Indian round of the MotoGP is saddening, we are glad it’s been rescheduled, and not completely cancelled.
