While this past week wasn’t as action-packed as the week before, we still had enough racing action to satiate that motorsport fix. We had a MotoGP race at the LeMans circuit in France, and double-header Formula E races at Berlin. This week also saw TVS Racing secure its 16-rider squad that’ll compete in the TVS Asia One Make Championship. Here’s everything that transpired:
The seventh round of the 2022 MotoGP season had plenty of storylines to talk about which included shock results from the big hitters as well as another title rider joining the title fight. The highlight of course was the fight for the race win, which eventually went to Enea Bastianini. Starting fifth, the Gresini Racing Ducati rider was up to third place in no time, shadowing the factory Ducatis of Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller who were running first and second.
But by half distance, Bastianini’s superior race pace came in clutch once again, dispatching not only Miller, but forcing Bagnaia into an error to lead the race and take his third win of the season. Bagnaia’s crash meant teammate Miller settled for second place, with Aprilia’s Aleix Esparagro scoring his third podium in three races with a third place finish. This leaves Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo only four points ahead of Espargaro in the riders standings with Bastianini further four points back.
Round 8 of the 2022 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship had double the action, with double-header races at Berlin. In the first race, it was Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara who converted pole position, and a late charge from the DS TeCheetah of Jean Eric Vergne to take top honors, with the Mercedes of Stoffel Vandoorne finishing third.
In the second race, Mortara took pole again, but it was reigning champion Nyck de Vries who took the early lead to seal the win. It was Stoffel Vandoorne who rounded off the podium in third place again. Vandoorne continues to lead the drivers' standings at 111 points, with Mortara now second at 99 points.
Off the track, there’s a new player joining the Formula E grid next season at the start of the Gen3 era,in the form of McLaren. And it's not going to be an all-new entry from the ground up, as they’ll be taking over the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team once they exit the sport after this season.
With TVS Racing’s new TVS Asia One Make Championship just around the corner, its rider lineup is complete. The 16-rider grid was completed via a rider selection process at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, where parameters such as rider skill, latest best achievements, lap timings, consistency and adaptability were taken into consideration. The riders will soon hop on board their race-spec Apache RR 310s once the four-round season kicks off in Malaysia on May 27.
Next week will see F1, F2 and F3 return to racing action at Barcelona. The 2022 World Rally Championship will resume at Rally Portugal.
