India Yamaha Motor has launched the new MT-09 in India. The 2017 Yamaha MT-09 has been priced at Rs 10.88 lakh and it will be brought to our two-wheeler market as a completely built unit. The older MT-09 made its India debut at the 2016 Auto Expo but failed to garner good sales due to its high asking price (Rs 11.36 lakh), and was discontinued earlier this year from our market as it didn’t comply with BS-IV emission norms. It was globally unveiled at the 2016 INTERMOT motorcycle show in Germany.

Yamaha designers have given the new motorcycle a cosmetic update and it now sports sharper and sportier lines. Each of the twin raked-out headlights are equipped with LED bulbs and are wide enough to cover the bulky forks rather than sitting between them. They are a bit reminiscent of the Yamaha MT-10 but we feel it looks much better on the new bike. Also, the main focus of the designers was to make the new motorcycle more compact than its predecessor, which is why the subframe is now 30mm shorter than the older motor. It also gets a swingarm-mounted rear fender and the tail lamp has been integrated into the body for a clutter-free look. The all-digital instrument console is similar to the older bike.

Powering the Yamaha motorcycle is an 847cc, 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that delivers 115PS of peak power at 10,000rpm and 87.5Nm of torque at 8500rpm. Power figures are exactly similar to the older motor despite being BS-IV emission norm-compliant. Saddle height has been increased by 5mm but Yamaha claim that the new seat offers better support for the rider. The new MT-09 also benefits from the addition of slipper clutch while Yamaha’s Quick Shift System (QSS) is now a standard fitment.

Yamaha engineers have also upgraded the 41mm-dia USD forks, with compression damping being adjustable on the left fork and rebound on the right, while a monoshock does duty at the rear. Braking is done by disc brakes on both ends while ABS is standard. Talking about competition, the Yamaha MT-09 goes up against the Kawasaki Z900, Ducati Monster 821 and the Triumph Street Triple RS. It will be offered in three colour options - Bluish Gray Solid, Deep Purplish Blue and Matte Dark Gray.
