Honda has revealed the ASEAN-spec version of the tenth-gen Accord in Bangkok. This version will replace the ninth-gen model which is currently on sale here in India. The US-spec version of the tenth-gen Accord was revealed back in 2017 and the ASEAN one, while based on the same model, gets a few unique elements of its own. Key changes include the two new engine options mated to automatic transmissions and an all-new interior.
The tenth-gen Accord gets a wider body, front and rear track as well as a longer wheelbase. The front grille looks similar to the ones seen on the new Civic and Amaze, which means it’s a big slab of chrome that extends all the way to the LED headlamps.
The headlamps and grille are not the only part which looks like the sporty Civic, even the taillamps mimic the C-shaped units seen on the Civic. However, they are a lot sleeker here. Also, the ASEAN-spec model gets a more prominent coupe-like stance than the US-spec version. It also gets new alloy wheels that measure 17- and 18-inches, depending on the variant and powertrain option.
The cabin on the ASEAN-spec Accord is quite similar to the model sold in the US. Hence, you get a clean, neo-retro layout with an 8-inch floating touchscreen which supports Apple CarPlay, manual knobs for the two-zone climate control, a head-up display (HUD), a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, wireless charger and a redesigned steering wheel with paddle shifters.
The new Honda Accord can be had with a 1.5-litre turbocharged VTEC engine with direct injection that makes for a total output of 190PS of power and 243Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a CVT and has a claimed fuel efficiency of 16.4kmpl. If you are looking for a more powerful powertrain, Honda offers the Accord with a 2.0-litre VTEC petrol engine mated to two electric motors that are powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries. Coupled to the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) System, this combination produces a total output of 215PS and can run on pure EV mode too. But if you want to access all the power possible, you can switch toSport mode uses engages both the motors as well as the internal combustion engine to offer the best performance possible. Mated to an E-CVT, this powertrain returns a mileage of 24.4kmpl.
In terms of safety, the Honda Accord gets a whole array of radar and camera-based safety systems like Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (ACC with LSF), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation System with Lane Departure Warning (RDM with LDW) and Auto High-Beam (AHB).
While it's still unclear when the new Accord will arrive in India, chances are it will still be a CBU offering and cost around Rs 45 lakh. Expect the tenth-gen Accord to be launched in India later this year, or early-2020. It will rival the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
