The past couple of months have been tough for motorsport fans in general, due to postponement or cancellation of events across different disciplines due to the threat of Coronavirus (COVID-19). And now another motorsport event joins the ever growing list with Desert Storm initially scheduled for April 25 to April 30, now postponed to the second half of 2020. This is the second major Indian rally to be postponed after the South India Rally scheduled for March 20 to March 22 was postponed to June 19 to June 21.
The Coronavirus has also affected many international motorsport events like Formula One, MotoGP, Formula-E, World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship and many more. Standalone events like the Isle Of Mann TT has been cancelled as well. Organisers are giving vague predictions that the motorsport season looks likely to continue sometime around early June with the revised season possibly even going into 2021.
While these are tentative dates, these could be altered further as there is no known cure for the virus at the moment and as per the World Health Organization,it is beyond containment and has been classified as a pandemic.
As it currently stands, COVID-19 has infected 182,749 people so far with 7,161 deaths confirmed. Majority of new cases are currently occurring outside China, where the virus originated. The virus is also slowly making its way into India, with 137 confirmed cases and 3 deaths. Any major event‘s schedule is to be considered fluid until further notice considering the situation at hand.
