The next iteration of Mahindra’s hardcore SUV, the Thar has been spied testing yet again. This time around, we have received spy shots of the hardtop variant for the first time. However, unlike the current-gen Thar which gets the hard top as an official accessory, Mahindra could introduce a hardtop variant with the upcoming model.
Going by the spy shots, the hardcore SUV seems to have grown in every dimension. However, Mahindra has retained the basic overall design of the Thar. So you get the iconic 7-slat grille flanked by the round headlamps. The bumpers and wheel arches have also increased in size and the next-gen Thar still features a spare wheel on the tailgate.

Mahindra will ditch the current-gen Thar’s 2.5-litre CRDe (106PS/247Nm) and 2.4-litre Di (64PS/195Nm) engines, thanks to the upcoming BS6 norms. Instead, the Thar is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre BS6-compliant diesel engine that’s expected to produce 142PS and 300Nm of torque. The Thar, being an offroader, is also expected to retain the four-wheel drive system, low-range gearbox and rear locking differentials to let you make the most of your adventure trip.

Underpinning the Thar will be a brand new platform from the Indian SUV maker. While its details are scarce at the moment, it is expected to be significantly beefed up to meet the upcoming crash test and safety norms. Speaking of which, we expect the next-gen Thar to feature dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front occupants’ seat-belt reminder and speeding alert.
While the interior of the SUV hasn’t been spied yet, we expect it to feature a more ergonomic cabin. The next-gen Thar is also expected to boast basic features like an audio system, manual AC and power windows.

It is likely to debut at the Auto Expo 2020. And once launched, we expect it to be priced above the current-gen Thar which retails from Rs 6.83 lakh to Rs 9.60 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The next-gen Thar will compete with the Force Gurkha when it hits the roads.
