Maruti Suzuki has listed the S-Cross petrol on its website, indicating an imminent launch. The 2020 S-Cross will be equipped with a BS6 petrol engine and mild-hybrid tech. Maruti could launch it after April 24, once the 10-day period to sell leftover BS4 stock is over. It has cleared its BS4 inventory, but that period will still be dominated by others offering discounts, which could overshadow the new car launch.
The S-Cross is expected to demand a slight premium over the current model’s Rs 8.81 lakh to Rs 11.44 lakh (ex-showroom) price range. However, Maruti Suzuki’s recent BS6 updates such as the Vitara Brezza have been priced lower than their diesel-only predecessors.
The S-Cross was sold with a 1.3-litre BS4 turbo diesel engine capable of 75PS of power and 200Nm of torque. The new naturally aspirated petrol engine has a larger displacement at 1.5 litres. At 138Nm, it produces 62Nm less torque than the oil-burner. But it gets a 30PS power bump over the diesel. The petrol shows promise with its better noise, vibration and harshness levels.
Apart from the new engine, the 2020 S-Cross is expected to have few changes. Maruti Suzuki is likely to equip it with the latest Smartplay Studio infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start, and cruise control are likely to be offered as well.
Although Maruti customers will miss the economy of the diesel, the petrol-mild hybrid powertrain is likely to make the S-Cross a fuel-efficient crossover. Once launched, it will rekindle rivalries with mid-size SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos as well as the Renault Duster. Watch this space for a launch announcement.
