The updated Compass will get cosmetic and feature upgrades along with possibly a new 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine

The Jeep Compass is up for a mid-life update in India. Jeep recently revealed the updated version in China. From exterior updates to a completely redesigned interior, the new Compass gets it all. It’s likely to launch by Q2 2021, but before that let’s see what we can expect from the upcoming update:

New Grille, More Beef

The front of the Compass gets some significant updates. This includes a slightly redesigned, sharper-looking seven-slat grille finished in black with honeycomb inserts and a touch of chrome. It is flanked by updated LED headlamps and DRLs, a first for the Compass, which earlier got halogen DRLs. Add an aggressive bumper and new alloy wheels to the mix, and the list of exterior updates is complete.

In terms of size, the new Compass is 4,424mm long, 1819mm wide, and 1,652mm tall. That’s 9mm longer and 17mm taller than the current model. What’s more, the AWD automatic variant is 25mm taller than the current version. This increase in length can be attributed to the new bumpers.

The Trailhawk version gets the same new grille but a more off-road centric front bumper as compared to the regular Compass. It also gets its own new set of alloy wheels but retains the red hooks, found only in the Trailhawk.

Jeep has given the interior of the new Compass a complete makeover. It gets a tan colour highlight in the cabin for the first time which could be offered in the India-spec model too. The Compass also gets a new bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the latest UConnect 5 software. The layout, too, sees some changes in the form of redesigned climate control knobs and a new steering wheel. The SUV also gets a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Expected Features

The Compass will come with connected car technology, with the ability to control certain features via your smartphone. Feature highlights include a premium sound system, ventilated front seats, and level-2 autonomous features comprising autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning.

Why Change What Needs No Fixing?

The new Compass is expected to retain its old diesel powertrain in India: a 170PS 2.0-litre diesel engine. Besides, it is also expected to get the option of FCA’s new 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine. Along with a 6-speed manual transmission, the turbo-petrol engine gets the option of a 7-speed DCT, whereas the diesel engine gets the option of a 9-speed AT. The diesel-powered Compass also gets the option of AWD in India.

When Will It Arrive?

The new Compass is already being tested in India and could be launched here by Q2 2021. It is likely to cost more or less the same as the outgoing model which retails from Rs 16.49 lakh to Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Compass will lock horns with the Skoda Karoq, Volkswagen T-ROC, Hyundai Tucson, and the upcoming Citroen C5 Aircross.
