The Monterey Car Week celebrates the best of cars, young and old to make it an auto industry’s Disneyland

With the volatile nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, having auto shows is still a bit of a risk. Thankfully, the return of Monterey Car Week after a year’s absence managed to go on smoothly in California, USA. It saw a raft of models from various eras being showcased and of course the main event, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance car show returning for its 70th edition. Here’s the coolest models that graced the 2021 Monterey Car Week:

1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn Kurier

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is well known for car collectors all over the world showcasing the most elegant of classic models. For the 2021 edition, it was the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn Kurier that was given the ‘Best In Show’ award. And we couldn’t agree more, as the rare model boasted a dramatically swoopy and tapered design, complemented with an all-black body shade. In fact, this prototype was originally built to tackle the autobahn in Germany. In fact, Rolex awarded the car’s owners, Arturo and Deborah Keller, a specially engraved Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 watch.

Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4

What better way to celebrate 50 years of the Lamborghini Countach, than to revive the iconic nameplate and showcase it at Monterey Car Week? This limited-run supercar gets a design heavily inspired by the 1974 model, and is powered by a 780PS 6.5-litre V12 engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system. To know more about it, head here

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance also saw oodles of motorsport heritage with 12 Porsche 917’s on display. But the one that stood out was the Gulf-liveried 1969 917K Coupe that won the Porsche 917 class at the car show. Aside from featuring in the Steve McQueen movie, Le Mans, the 917K had a dominant career, winning seven out of ten races in the 1970 World Sportscar Championship.

Audi Skysphere Concept

We also got a glimpse of Audi’s future with the radical Skysphere electric roadster concept being showcased in the flesh at Monterey Car Week. It looks even sexier than the digital renders with a sleek design, a space-age cabin, and a 624PS electric powertrain. In fact, the Skysphere can even turn into a grand tourer at the touch of a button. To know more, head here

Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider

The 2021 Monterey Car Week also saw Aston Martin unleash its most radical open-top model to date, the Valkyrie Spider. It’s essentially the same radical hybrid hypercar as the coupe, but now you can experience the roaring V12 with the roof off. A Cosworth-made naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine, Rimac-designed KERS hybrid battery system, and Integral Powertrain electric motor make a combined 1176PS of grunt. Pininfarina Battista

After a long period of testing, Automobili Pininfarina took the wraps off the first production-spec Battista. The all-electric hypercar boasts an earth shattering 1900PS of grunt via four electric motors that are backed up with a 120kWh battery pack and can go from nought to 100kmph in less than 2 seconds. Rimac Nevera

With the Battista being revealed here, it's no surprise that its sibling, the Rimac Nevera electric hypercar, also made an appearance here.  It's also powered by four electric motors that deliver a mind-boggling 1914PS and 2360Nm! The 0-100kmph sprint can be achieved in just 1.97 seconds. To know more, head  here.
