If you’ve been staying abreast with the developments in the two-wheeler space, you probably know Yamaha recently slashed the prices of the FZ-25. In fact, the new price puts it squarely against a segment lower than where it actually competes. But is the FZ a threat to any of its 200cc competitors? We find out by putting it against the best bike in the segment, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V.
Acceleration

0-60kmph |
4.37s |
4.08s |
0-100kmph |
12.23s |
10.89s |
Both bikes make almost identical power figures, however, the FZ’s larger engine and better torque output at lower revs allow it to pull away from the RTR. It’s a tad quicker to get off the line and extends its lead by a little over a second to 100kmph.
Roll-On

4.69s |
40-80kmph |

It’s the same story when it comes to roll-on accelerations. The FZ’s meatier bottom-end and mid-rage power delivery get the better of the RTR 200, both from 30-70kmph as well as 40-80kmph. What’s also worth noting is the FZ’s weight, which is just 2kg less than the RTR, giving it a better power-to-weight ratio.
Braking

17.97m |
100-0kmph |
50.70m |
52.44m |
Braking was one of the biggest drawbacks of the RTR 200, thankfully, TVS has fixed this issue with the 2021 iteration. The revised hardware helps it out brake the FZ-25 by a fair margin. As a matter of fact, the RTR 200 now stops 2 metres shorter than even the Apache RR 310, a motorcycle that has a larger front rotor, a radial brake calliper, and grippier tyres. That’s saying something!
Fuel Efficiency

City |
47.61kmpl |
50.33kmpl |
Highway |
49.80kmpl |
42.42kmpl |
The sheer tractability of the 197.75cc motor on the RTR is what will impress you the most. The flatter torque curve makes the engine extremely usable, be it in city traffic or out on the highway. The fuel efficiency figures speak for themselves.
The FZ, on the other hand, makes most of its power in the bottom- and mid-range, making it a perfect city slicker. However, the lack of top-end performance and shorter gearing means you will end up using more fuel while trying to maintain cruising speeds.
