Packs the same 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine as the R15 V3 and MT-15

[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the Aerox 155 in India at Rs 1.29 lakh. To know more details about the sporty maxi-scooter, read our launch story here.]

We recently came across official Yamaha documents suggesting that the Japanese bike maker has plans of introducing its first proper sporty scooter in India, the 2021 Aerox 155. It’ll be positioned to go up against the Aprilia SR 160. The scooter packs a powerful engine, decent hardware, and a bunch of features. Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know about the scooter.

Uses The Same Engine As The YZF-R15 V3

The Aerox 155 is powered by the same 155cc liquid-cooled VVA-equipped single-cylinder engine as the R15 V3 and MT-15. However, the India-spec model has been detuned to make 15PS and 13.9Nm, which is a little under 4PS and 0.3Nm less than the R15.

Premium Hardware?

Not exactly. The setup’s pretty straight forward. The Aerox 155 comprises a 28mm telescopic fork and twin rear shocks, with an option to update it to KYB gas-charged shock abosrbers. The larger 14-inch wheels use a front disc and a rear drum brake for anchorage.

The Aerox 155 is a popular scooter in the Southeast Asian market, thanks to its sharp and race-ready design. In terms of features, the scooter gets a full-digital LCD dash with smartphone connectivity via the Yamaha Y-Connect app, a USB charging port in the glove box, and an LED headlight and taillight. Interestingly, its 5.5-litre fuel tank is positioned in the mid-tunnel for easy access.

Plenty Of Storage

Aside from the glove box in the front apron, the scooter offers 24.5 liters of underseat storage, which is good enough to accommodate an XL size full-face helmet, according to Yamaha.

What About Price?

The leaked document mentions that the engine will be manufactured in Yamaha's Indonesia plant, which means the scooter will be brought down to India via the CKD route. This could up the asking price; our estimate is that it could be priced around Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom). If our guess holds true, that would make it pricier than its chief rival, the Aprilia SR160. However, the Aerox 155 does offer better performance, a well-tuned suspension setup, and more features to justify the extra money.
