Honda recently unveiled its 2022 CB500 range in Europe which includes the CB500F, CBR500R and the CB500X -- the last one being the only 500 bike from the Japanese bike maker’s portfolio to be sold in India. The 2021 model which benefits from some crucial updates is expected to make it to India. But how different is it from the current-gen bike?
Better Hardware
The biggest change on the 2022 CB500X is its underpinnings. The ADV now features a more premium preload-adjustable 41mm Showa Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks as opposed to the conventional telescopic unit that’s seen on the current model. While the rear monoshock is the same as before, it now features five stages of preload adjustment with a newly optimised spring rate and damping settings to complement the front fork.
The bike's handling receives a boost thanks to a new swingarm, which is lighter with more lateral flex. Honda has also swapped out the single disc setup with twin 296mm front discs for better stopping power. These petal discs continue to be clamped by Nissin calipers. A redesigned chain guard completes the new look.
Brighter LED Headlight
The 2022 CB500X's headlight has been updated with brighter LEDs for improved high/low beams. Other than this, the bike's feature list is pretty much the same.
It continues to use the same digital negative-LCD instrument cluster, LED tail light and turn indicators, ABS, and slipper clutch. What could have been updated is the readouts on the console. It continues to show the same basic information as before, which we think is a slight disappointment, especially when you take its rivals into consideration.
Striking New Colours
The 2022 CB500X will be available in three new liveries: Grand Prix Red, Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic, and Pearl Organic Green.
Same Engine, But Better
The Euro 5/ BS6-compliant 471cc, liquid-cooled motor is very much the same. Peak power of 47.5PS arrives at 8,600rpm, with 43Nm torque delivered at 6,500rpm. However, the new fuel injection settings improve the torque feel and character without compromising on the bike's performance. Also, the shape and position of the new engine mounts, plus the frame’s rigidity balance, help reduce vibration, according to Honda. Rounding off the package is a slightly lighter radiator.
Despite this, the 2022 CB500X is actually 2kg heavier than before at 199kg.
Expected Price?
The current-gen Honda CB500X is already quite expensive at Rs 6.87 lakh (ex-showroom). It would be nice to see Honda bring in the new model at the same price or lower if it manages to localize a few parts. The rest of Honda’s 500cc range is also expected to make its way to India, however, for now, we can only look forward to riding the smaller CB200X.
