22Kymco has brought the X-Town 300i ABS to India as the petrol-powered maxi-scooter goes on sale for Rs 2.30 lakh (on-road Delhi). We were a bit on the fence as to whether Kymco would actually bring in the maxi-scooter given the lukewarm reception of big capacity scooters in India. Maybe, this might actually be a turning point for such two-wheelers in India. The big news is that 22Kymco will be manufacturing the scooter in India at its facility in Haryana. Operations will begin in 6 cities with the aim to have over 300 touchpoints in the next three years.

The X-Town 300i has all the makings of a big brawny maxi-scooter. Though not meant for your daily veggie runs, it is much rather a city slicker with the added convenience of touring to places far away. It has a wide front apron with a really tall windshield for touring convenience. Also, its seating space is as large as a cruiser motorcycle with a fuel tank which puts a few similar cubic capacity motorcycles to shame (12.5 litres).

When you have something as large as this, the motor also needs to be as capable. That’s why Kymco has plonked in a 276cc single-cylinder motor which is fuel-injected and has liquid-cooling. It makes a healthy 24.5PS and 25Nm which should be more than enough to lug its 181kg (dry) weight.

The X-Town 300i also gets premium components, not seen commonly on scooters in India. Big 37mm conventional fork and twin shocks handle suspension duties, while it gets disc brakes (260mm front, 240mm rear) at either ends. It rides on 14-inch front and 13-inch rear wheel. The X-Town 300i gets a Bosch-developed dual-channel ABS system too. It is India's only scooter with dual-channel ABS yet.

There are no direct rivals to the X-Town 300i currently, but hopefully this will encourage other manufacturers to bring in such vehicles to India.
