BMW is all set to launch the all-new 5 Series sedan in India, more than seven years after the previous gen car was launched here. Here are 5 important things about the new 5 Series you ought to know.

1) Will be available with three engine options

2017 BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series will be on sale in India with three engine options - one petrol and two diesels. All engines will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, with power sent to the rear wheels.

The 530i will be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor developing 252PS of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque.

The 520d will be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor developing 190PS of maximum power and 400Nm of peak torque. The 530d, on the other hand, will be powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine developing 265PS of maximum power and 620Nm of peak torque.

The all new M5 will be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor show and should be headed to India soon after.

2) Trim levels

The BMW 5 Series 530d will be exclusively available only in the M Sport trim - with cosmetic and some mechanical components from the company's iconic M Sport division.

The 530i and the 520d may be offered in two trim levels - most probably Prestige and Luxury Line.

3) Fancy features!

Features from the flagship 7 Series sedan make their way to the 5 Series too. Highlights here include the remote control parking system (which lets you move the car backwards or forwards from the outside to fit it in a tight parking space, or to show off), gesture control for the infotainment system (use hand predefined hand gestures to control various functions - for example, rotate a finger to control the volume), wireless phone charging, all-digital instrument cluster etc.

4) Not enough rear cabin space to beat the E-Class

2017 BMW 5 Series

While the new BMW 5 Series is longer (by 26mm) and has a longer wheelbase (by 11mm) than the car it replaces, its wheelbase is still a whole 105mm shorter than that of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB on sale in India.

While the 5 Series may not be as spacious for rear seat passengers as the E-Class, it should be better as a drivers' car.

5) Expect a bump in price

2017 BMW 5 Series

Currently, the BMW 5 Series range in India is priced from Rs 54.80 lakh to Rs 62 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. We expect the new BMW 5 Series to be priced in the Rs 60-70 lakh range.

It will compete against the Audi A6 (Rs 48.10 lakh to Rs 53.75 lakh), Volvo S90 (Rs 54.51 lakh), Lexus ES (Rs 55.27 lakh) and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (Rs 55.67 lakh to Rs 81.42 lakh). Stay tuned to ZigWheels for the latest news on the new BMW 5 Series.
