After revealing the all-new Sportage in June 2021, Kia has now divulged the SUV’s features, safety assistance kit, and powertrain options. The highlight is the new hybrid powertrain that will be sold alongside the standard petrol and diesel models.
This report focuses mainly on the SUV’s features and powertrains. If you’re interested in the Sportage’s design, head to our detailed unveiling report.
Powertrain Options
The Kia Sportage will be offered with 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines. The former can be had with manual and dual-clutch transmissions while the latter is offered only with a torque converter automatic. Here’s a quick look at the specifications:
Technical Specifications |
1.6-litre turbo-petrol |
2.0-litre diesel |
Power (PS) |
180PS |
186PS |
Torque (Nm) |
264Nm |
417Nm |
Transmission Option |
6-speed manual / 7-speed DCT |
8-speed automatic |
Apart from the standard options, Kia will also offer the Sportage with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. While the specifications are yet to be revealed, we suspect it will be the same unit found under the hood of the 2022 Tucson. Kia says the Sportage will also come with all-wheel drive, but it remains to be seen which engine will feature it.
Road Handling-based Features
Like the India-spec Seltos, the Sportage too comes with drive and traction modes. However, the former has an extra Smart mode which we’re guessing adjusts various parameters based on driving style and terrain. Also new to the Sportage are adaptive dampers, which allow you to stiffen or soften the suspension.
The hybrid variant also comes with Kia’s E-handling system, which claims to allow sharper entry and exit on winding sections of the road.
Safety Features on Offer
the automobile community
The Sportage comes with MG Gloster-like advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). It includes forward collision assist, highway driving assistance, smart cruise control, blindspot collision assistance, and navigation-based cruise control. Most of these features are found on the Gloster and you can read out about their functionality here.
The SUV gets a regular safety kit with six airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, electronic stability control, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
India Launch
At the moment, Kia has no plans to launch the Sportage in India. The Korean carmaker’s next model for us is likely to be a 7-seater SUV based on the Alcazar’s platform. You can read about it in detail right here.
