Bengaluru-based electric startup Ather Energy has confirmed that it will be pulling the plug on the standard 450, the scooter that put the brand on the map. Well, at least in India. What’s unclear is the exact timeline as to when Ather intends to do this. The base variant will be replaced by the 450X Plus, which means you could switch between the new subscription plans if and when required, giving customers more flexibility. Besides, having two scooters with the same levels of performance doesn’t make any logical sense, especially when the 450X Plus is more future-proof compared to the outgoing model.
Opting for the monthly subscription plan will set the owner back by Rs 1,699 per month for the Plus pack. It comes with a host of benefits such as a free Ather Dot home charger, unlimited charging using the company’s Ather Grid network of chargers, connected services and over-the-air software upgrades. And just in case your battery’s performance drops below 80 per cent, Ather will swap them out, no questions asked. Talk about peace of mind! Oh, and we’d like to clear the air, the monthly subscription plan doesn’t include the scooter. The 450X will set you back by an additional Rs 99,000.

Or, if you have wads of cash lying around, you could buy the scooter upfront for a sum of Rs 1.49 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Bengaluru). The bulk amount gets you three years of battery warranty and the home charger but misses out the aforementioned extras. You could, however, get unlimited public charging, connected services, and over-the-air software upgrades if you're willing to fork out Rs 400 per month. In terms of expansion plans, Ather will be setting up its ‘Experience Centers’ in Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune starting July 2020. According to the manufacturer, the ex-showroom price of the 450X in Mumbai could be similar to that in Bengaluru.
