The Ather 450X in our opinion is the best electric scooter on sale in the Indian market. We had ridden the scooter earlier this year and was thoroughly impressed by its performance, features and tech. While the stock Ather 450X is a striking-looking scooter, the boffins at Ather felt that they could do better and have unveiled the new Ather 450X Series 1. The new electric scooter is a limited run production offering and will only be available to customers who had pre-ordered the 450X before its official launch. While Ather hasn't specified the exact production number, it did mention it to be around a couple of thousand units.

So what makes the Series 1 special? The first thing that you will notice is the new glossy black paint (the standard variant gets grey, white and mint green). It also gets red accents on the apron, alloy wheels, monoshock, instrument console and the trellis frame, a neat touch in our opinion. However, the pièce de résistance are the translucent rear body panels that give you a peek of the beautifully engineered aluminium chassis. Ather claims that it’s the first Indian OEM to offer tinted translucent panels.

When we had first seen the chassis of the scooter a few years back, we were impressed by the manner in which the engineers and designers had managed to combine form and function. At that time we had commented that it’s a shame that many people wouldn’t be able to appreciate its beauty, but the translucent panels take care of that. If you’re wondering that the underseat storage space is also translucent, that’s not the case as only the frame is visible. The storage tub panel isn’t translucent.

The Ather Series 1 will cost the same as the standard unit i.e. Rs 1.59 lakh (ex-showroom Bengaluru, including GST & FAME II subsidy). Ather also announced that deliveries for its premium electric scooter will commence in November and the delay has been owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also has plans to expand its operation in new cities.
