Hot on the heels of the launch of the Q5 petrol, Audi has announced prices for the ‘Design Edition’ variants of the Q3 and the Q7.

The Q3 Design Edition is based on the Premium Plus variant and costs Rs 40.76 lakh. That’s a premium of Rs 1.08 lakh compared to the variant it’s based upon. What do you get for the extra cash? The biggest additions come in the form of clear lens tail lamps and Nappa leather upholstery. Audi has also thrown in a few extra goodies such as ‘quattro’ decals, a coat hanger and LED entry lights (puddle lamps that project the Audi rings / quattro logo).

If you’re keen on buying this variant, we’d suggest spending a little over Rs 2 lakh extra and opt for the Technology variant instead. That way, you won’t be deprived of basic features such as a reverse parking camera, a coloured MID (multi-information display) and in-built navigation. Expectedly, there are no mechanical changes. You get the same 2.0-litre diesel (184PS/380Nm) paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. The 1.4-litre petrol engine is not offered with the Design Edition package.

On the other end of Audi’s Q range is the Q7 Design Edition, prices for which start at Rs 82.37 lakh. This variant has the Technology pack ticked and gets some more added goodies. This includes Audi’s ‘cool bag’ (a portable cooler that plugs into a 12V socket) and the ‘rear seat entertainment pack’ that consists of a screen mounted behind each of the front seats. Other minor updates include smoked-out tail lamps as well as Audi decals on the D-pillar. In the Q7’s case, the Design Edition costs Rs 1.76 lakh extra. That seems justified since the screens are a Rs 1.3 lakh option, whereas the cool bag is a Rs 20,000 add-on in global markets.

Unlike the Q3 Design Edition that can be had only with a diesel engine, the Q7 Design Edition will get both engine options. There’s a 2.0-litre petrol (252PS/370Nm) as well as a 3.0-litre diesel (249PS/600Nm) on offer. Both engines are strapped on to 8-speed automatic transmissions and power all four wheels.

We think the Design Edition makes a lot of sense if you’re buying the Q7 and not so much if you’re buying the Q3.
