Who prayed for a four-door practical car, which can gulp up to 535 litres of luggage with all the seats up, seat four in exuberant comfort, has a V8 under the bonnet, and can embarrass most sports cars in a drag race? Well, if you did, Audi is here to oblige. It has launched the RS7 Performance Sportback in India at an asking price of Rs 1,59,65,000 (approximately Rs 1.6 crore, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Since this car is all about its insane performance figures, let’s get straight to the engine bay. It boasts a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which is tuned to produce an unbelievable 605PS of power and up to 750Nm of torque. Why the ‘up to’ in that equation? Well, a constant 700Nm of torque is available between 1,750 and 6,000 rpm, but with the overboost function that the RS7 Performance is equipped with, the engine will temporarily churn out up to 750Nm of torque between 2,500 and 5,500 rpm. This function is activated automatically under full load if the engine/transmission setting is set to ‘dynamic’ mode.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and the power is transferred to the wheels through the ‘quattro’ all-wheel drive system. If given enough space, the RS7 Performance will crack 100kmph from a standstill in a mere 3.7 seconds and, with the dynamic package plus option, hit a top speed of 305kmph.

When compared to the standard RS7 Sportback variant, there are subtle differences in the Performance edition. Starting with the engine, the RS7 Performance produces 45PS more power, and the maximum rpm limit has been increased by 200. Other differences include gunmetal accents on the outside, and a ‘drive select’ button on the steering wheel, with Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual modes. Also, 21-inch alloy wheels are available as an option, with the standard being 20-inchers. In addition to the existing colours, the RS7 Performance will also have an exclusive colour – Ascari Blue.

The Audi RS7 Performance will lock horns with its German counterparts – the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, which currently wears a price tag of Rs 1.77 crore and the Porsche Panamera Turbo, which is priced at Rs 1.96 crore (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). All these cars are ideal for someone who wants a practical four-door car for his/her two-plus-two family, and wants to have fun on the race track too.
