Volkswagen has unveiled its T-Prime GTE concept car at the ongoing 2016 Beijing Auto Show. Herbert Diess, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen passenger cars, claimed that the company will launch ten new SUVs for the Chinese market till 2020. These SUV’s are also expected to be launched in India in the coming few years as currently the German car maker has no SUV’s in their Indian portfolio. Here’s a list of the upcoming SUV’s-
Tiguan
Volkswagen showcased the Tiguan at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo and we can expect the same to be launched in India by the end of this year. We expect the pricing of the Tiguan to start from around Rs 28 lakh and go upto Rs 33 lakh. It will most likely be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Volkswagen might also bring in the GTE hybrid version of the Tiguan sometime next year.
Tiguan 7 Seater
Just as the name suggests, the Tiguan 7 seater will be a long wheelbase version of the regular Tiguan with a capacity to seat 7 people. The Tiguan 7 seater will share its 2.0-litre diesel engine with the regular Tiguan and might also get a hybrid version later on.
The T Prime GTE will be the new flagship luxury SUV from Volkswagen. It is a plug-in hybrid which is powered by a 2.0 TSI petrol engine which produces 248bhp of power along with a 134bhp electric motor. Based on the MLB platform, similar to the recently launched Bentley Bentayga (https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/rs-385-crore-bentley-bentayga-suv-launched-in-india/25336/), the T Prime GTE concept car is a four-seater but we can expect the actual production version of the car to have a five or a seven-seater layout.
T-Cross
The T-Cross is a compact SUV based on the Polo hatchback. Alongside the hardtop, Volkswagen showcased a convertible version as well, T-Cross Breeze. It has a length spanning 4.1 metres and a wheelbase of 2.5 metres. While the concept was showcased with a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol mill, the production version will most likely share everything with the Polo hatchback.
T-ROC
Just like the T-Cross concept is based on the Polo, the T-ROC is a compact SUV based on the Golf Mk7 hatchback. It is a three-door crossover and has a few off-road styling elements such as the pseudo skid plates. The concept version has a split folding roof, a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with a 7-speed DSG and an all-wheel-drive system.
Cross Blue
The Cross Blue is a diesel plug-in-hybrid SUV concept that will sit below the Touareg in the VW SUV range. Volkswagen has plans of launching it in US and China before considering it for Europe and India. It will most likely replace the VW Routan minivan which has not been doing well for the company due to the increased demand for compact and mid-size SUV’s. It will share its platform with the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq but will have a different body design.
