Between the roar of an engine and crunching of the metal there is something about over-the-top-car chases that gets us going. ZigWheels brings you a rundown of the greatest action-packed thriller movies featuring some of the deadliest car-o-batics

The movie Death Race has one of the most 'protected' cars and it's not just about a race to the finish line, but about car-against-car battles. A remake of a 2000 film, this Jason Statham starrer is about prison inmates forced to participate in death-defying car races by a ruthless and greedy warden, who puts the race videos for sale on the internet. Statham plays a con who has been framed for his wife's murder so that he can take over the wheel of the film's star car. This is an action-packed film with loads of gory crashes and high speed dashes to suit fans of tough car movies.

The plot of The Italian Job is flawless and the heist has been executed perfectly. The opening scene features the shameful waste of a Lamborghini Muira, which enters an Alpine tunnel but fails to emerge after a fatal encounter with an earth-mover. Full of twists, turns and exciting stunts with armoured cars, motorcycles and helicopters, this remake of a 70s movie, is a thrill-a-minute wild ride.

The Fast And The Furious, as the title suggests, has an array of legendary race cars like the 1966 Ford GT40, 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, 1970 Dodge Charger, 1970 Ford Maverick, 1972 Nissan Skyline, 1972 Pantera Detomaso, 1972 Pantera Detomaso to a 2002 Porsche GT3, 2006 GMC 2500 Yukon, 2009 Nissan 370Z, among others, that fill up the screen and your eardrums with the heady roar of their stonking engines revved up to the redline... cool, no matter how unbelievable the race and chase sequences are.

Other car movies worth a look are Cobra (1986), The Blues Brothers (1980), Batman (1989), Cars (2006), Goldfinger (1964), Dukes of Hazzard (2005), Le Mans, Bullitt, Quantum Of Solace, For Your Eyes Only, The French Connection, The Transporter, Grand Prix and the cult status film featuring a Dodge Charger, Vanishing Point.
