The blind spot detection system uses cameras, radar sensors and ultrasonic systems to feed data to warning systems and to the driver that is not visible from the driver’s seat. All cars have blind spots at the front and at the back. For example, when a car is driving out of a narrow lane the driver cannot see what is around the corner. Then there is the case of blind sports from behind the car. At certain angles vehicles approaching from behind are not visible in the rear view mirrors.
Ultrasonic or radar sensors are located on the sides of a vehicle in the front and rear bumpers. In case of rear sensors, the sensors detect objects close to the vehicle and warn the driver via a light signal in the rear view mirror to alert the driver of an oncoming vehicle from close behind. Only when the warning is ignored an audible warning is played to further alert the driver.
The sensors mounted in the front bumper work in correlation of the rear sensors to ensure that the driver only undertakes a manoeuvre once the vehicle from behind is at a safe distance or has passed ahead.
Cameras mounted in the front bumper send live feed to the display screen inside the vehicle. If an object is approaching from either side that is obstructed from the driver’s view it will show up on the screen and the driver can slow down to allow the object to pass before exiting a narrow alley or tight parking spot.
Rear view cameras located in the rear bumper of a vehicle also help detect objects in blind spots while reversing a vehicle. A rear view camera displays feed from angles which are not visible to the driver thereby helping the driver to reverse easily and safely. While reverse parking sensors play audible beeps with varying frequency to alert a driver as to how close the car is to an object behind it.
