The prototype of the long-rumoured BMW 1 series has finally been caught testing. With Audi and Mercedes-Benz cashing in on the entry-level premium sedan segment, BMW too seems to be on its way to bring an offering in this class of cars.

Based on the spy shots it is clear that the BMW 1 series sedan will sport a conventional notchback body style. Expected to be marginally smaller in length than the 3 Series, the A3 and CLA-Class competitor is expected to have a tall boot.

Thanks to the heavy camouflage it was difficult to figure out the exact design of the car but expect it to be in line with the new BMW design language. Like all other cars in its model range, the 1 Series sedan too will have the kidney grille which will be flanked by projector headlamps. At the back the round tail lights and the dual exhaust were clearly visible.

The 1 Series sedan is likely to be based on the same platform as the 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop and the 2016 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. In sync with reports from BMW, this same platform will also form the basis for the updated 1 Series in the time to come.

The 1 Series sedan is expect to sport the same engine as the 2 Series Active Tourer, meaning a series of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged units. In the future, we can also look forward to the 1 Series M performance models which will in all probability will feature a four-cylinder turbocharged engine which will be tweaked for performance.

The BMW 1 series sedan is expected to make its debut in the second half of 2015 in the international markets. We can expect the car to land on Indian shore towards the end of 2015 or early the following year.
