The seventh generation 5'er will have its work cut out for it

BMW's middle-child, the 5 Series, will finally get its generation leap on June 29. Bookings are officially open as well. The sedan is in its seventh generation now, and like always, evolution is the name of the game.

The next-gen sedan, lovingly referred to as 'G30' by BMW nerds, looks much like a scaled-down 7 Series. Needless to mention, the quintessential BMW elements including the dual projector headlamps with squared-off corona rings, the kidney grille and the shark-fin antenna are in place. The 5 Series has grown in size as well–it is 36mm longer, 6mm wider and 2mm taller. The wheelbase is up by 7mm as well, which should technically translate into better cabin room.

Speaking of the cabin, the global 5 Series gets a plethora of features for you to even keep track of. But those expected to make the cut for India include the LCD instrument cluster (a la Audi Virtual Cockpit), a touchscreen infotainment system and gesture control. The usuals, such as four-zone climate control, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and electric seats will be on offer as well. The 5 will also sport the remote control parking feature that lets you park the car (or bring it out of your driveway) using the touchscreen key fob.

Engine options for the 5 Series in India will include the 30i petrol, and the 20d and 30d diesel. The petrol motor is the 252PS/350Nm 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged unit we’ve seen in the recently launched 330i. The diesel ban-proof diesel is a 2.0-litre four pot as well, developing 190PS and 400Nm. The flagship of the 5 Series range will be the 530d M Sport that gets a grumbly 3.0-litre in-line six, developing a massive 265PS and 620Nm. All engines will come paired with BMW’s stellar 8-speed automatic gearbox.

We say the Bimmer has its work cut out for it, especially since Mercedes-Benz has upped the ante with the long wheelbase E-Class. The addition of the E 220 d only makes Merc’s foothold stronger in the segment. Not to forget that the Swedes are in it to win with the fully imported Volvo S90, whereas the Brits have their foot in the door with the (now locally assembled) Jaguar XF. And last but not the least, there’s the Audi A6 that should turn on the heat sometime next year when it debuts in an all-new avatar.

Prices? Well, considering the additional tech on offer we are expecting 5-10 per cent bump up in prices. The 5 Series range is likely to start at Rs 55 lakh, and go all the way up to Rs 70 lakh for the top-spec 530d M Sport.
