We already know that the BMW R 1200 GS is in dire need of an update, especially considering how far competition from Ducati and Triumph has moved forward. To keep up with the times, BMW will soon be updating it thoroughly, details of which have recently surfaced online.
For starters, it will be called the R 1250 GS. As the name suggests, the current 1170cc boxer-twin engine will soon be replaced by a bigger 1254cc engine. Reports suggest that this should result in a bump up of 11PS in power, from 124.7PS to 135.8PS. The new motorcycle is also set to come with a new cylinder head and variable valve timing technology - something which we've already seen on the Ducati Multistrada 1260. That aside, reports also suggest that the R 1250 GS is expected to come with a quieter exhaust package.
As far as design is concerned, we're not expecting any drastic changes. In all likelihood, the motorcycle will continue to sport a similar design language as its predecessor. However, the R 1250 GS is expected to be a bit longer and wider, to accommodate the new engine and also a bit heavier (5kg), owing to VVT and a new exhaust system. This should result in a wet weight of around 249kg.
Just like its predecessor, the R 1250 GS will be available in two variants - Standard and Adventure. Thankfully, we won't have to wait that long to see it in the flesh, as BMW is likely to debut it at the 2018 INTERMOT Motorcycle Show in Cologne, Germany, in October. The BMW R 1250 GS is likely to get a minor price hike, resulting in a price of around Rs 17 - 18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Once launched, it will go up against the Ducati Multistrada 1260 and the Triumph Tiger 1200.
