Over a decade ago, German auto giant, BMW launched its F650 Funduro motorcycle in India under its collaboration with the Hero group. However, the bike was ahead of its time and BMW managed to sell only a couple of F650 bikes. The collaboration ended almost instantly and BMW withdrew from the Indian market.

BMW Motorrad, the German car-maker's motorcycle arm, is once again looking at entering the high-end motorcycle market in India. Although the demand for these premium motorcycles costing anywhere between Rs. 9 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, is negligible, the Japanese bike-makers like Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda, have already introduced their international flagships in India. America's iconic brand Harley Davidson is also very enthusiastic about entering the Indian sphere with its range of high-end cruiser motorcycles.

The Indian high-end motorcycle market is still at an infant stage but it is growing steadily and packs in a lot of potential for the international bike-makers. BMW Motorrad is the latest firm to have shown interest in bringing its range of elite on/off road, touring and street motorcycles to India. However, the BMW officials are currently analyzing and studying the market for the viability of launching their premium two-wheeler products.

Thanks to the duties levied by the Indian government on motorcycle imports, the BMW range will also play in the same price bracket of Rs. 10-15 lakh and compete with the existing Japanese rivals. BMW automobiles have already filtered in the Indian car scene and have received a warm welcome in the luxury car market.
