BMW is all set to launch the 1-series luxury hatchback today. The BMW 1-Series is a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Volvo V40 CrossCountry and the Audi Q3 S.
Based on the new 3-series platform, the car has good quality interiors. The exteriors follow in the family style of a long sleek hood narrowing down to a sharp snout, a set back passenger cabin and a sharply chiseled rear. BMW would most probably bring in the 1.6 litre Turbo Petrol good for 138PS and the 2.0 litre 144PS Turbo diesel engine, both of which will be mated to the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The hatchback will be assembled at BMW India's Chennai facility which currently assembles the 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, the X1 compact SUV and the diesel X3. Taking advantage of a lower duty imposed on the car as opposed to CBU imports, BMW should be able to price the new 1 Series very aggressively, roughly around the Rs 20-22 lakhs (estimated) for the starting petrol variant.
With its compact proportions, powerful petrol and diesel engine options, strong rear wheel drive characteristics and internationally acclaimed handling the 1 Series may prove to be what enthusiasts have been wishing for. A proper rear-wheel drive hot hatch!
