TVS RTR20

Buying a new bike is an important financial decision, and after you have bought one the fun begins. But, so do other expenses like fuel, consumables and service costs. While these might seem as small variables, they do matter in the long run.

TVS has been one of the major players in the market with a diverse portfolio. Out of which, we have selected its most important models - the TVS Apache RTR 200 and Jupiter for a long-term service analysis. So how much do you pay in service for these two bikes for say, a period of two years? Let’s find out.

TVS RTR20

The Apache RTR 200 is available in two variants - carburetted and fuel-injected. The carburetted variant is priced at Rs 89,410 (ex-showroom Delhi) and the fuel-injected one is priced at Rs 94,460 (ex-Showroom Delhi). Let's focus on the more popular carburetted variant.

The carburetted variant comes with a two-year, 24,000km warranty. There is an option to extend the warranty for by one year/12,000km at Rs 350 extra but this comes with the condition that the bike should be serviced as per schedule at an authorised TVS workshop. The bike gets five free services for the first year.

For a free service, you do not pay for labour charges but you do have to pay for consumables like Engine oil, air filter, oil filter, etc. A typical free service, with an oil change, should cost you Rs 630 which includes the price of engine oil (Rs 525), oil filter element (Rs 70) and taxes. The Apache RTR 200 requires 1.2 litres of fully synthetic oil which needs to be replaced during the first service and thereafter every six thousand kilometres. It is also advisable to replace the oil filter paper element during every oil change.

The front fork oil seal and bottom chain guide needs inspection and if damaged, replacement around the 9000km mark.

For the first year of ownership, you are looking at approximately spending Rs 2,365 towards service.

The paid service costs approximately Rs 500, including taxes. So adding the two oil changes, spark plug, oil filter, air filter, fork oil seal, fork oil and bottom chain guide replacement in the service schedule, you can expect to pay Rs 5,505 for the second year. A major chunk of this expense is the labour for fork oil seal replacement (700), fork oil (800) and labour charges for three services (500 each).

TVS Jupiter

The TVS Jupiter is priced at Rs 58,183 (ex-showroom Delhi) and comes with a two-year/24,000km warranty. There is an option to extend the warranty for by one year/12,000km at Rs 350 extra but this comes with the condition that the bike should be serviced as per schedule at an authorised TVS workshop. The bike gets four free services for the first year.

The Jupiter requires 750ml of engine oil but being an automatic scooter, it requires an additional 10ml of transmission oil which needs to be replaced with the engine oil. Both need to be replaced during the first service and thereafter, every six thousand kilometres.
