Bali-based Deus’s Aka-Tombo is a handcrafted beauty that you’d want in your garage

Yamaha’s XSR lineup of neo-retro motorcycles have been appreciated across the globe, and while the Indian enthusiasts had to settle for the oddball FZ-X, ASEAN markets have been relishing its more potent sibling-- the Yamaha XSR 155. Deus, a Bali-based custom shop was the latest participant in the ninth Yamaha’s Yard Built program, and they have transformed the neo-retro roadster into a go-anywhere scrambler that you’d want in your garage.

Deus chose to go for an industrial look for their build, stripping away all the bulky bits like side panels, fenders and the even pillion footpegs while flaunting the Deltabox frame. The stock fuel tank was replaced by a smaller, more compact unit, followed by a tastefully done cantilever tuck-and-roll seat. Housed under the seat is a new LED tail light unit integrated into the subframe. With the side panels gone, Deus chose to cover the subframe with a perforated aluminum sheet that gives a glimpse of what lies underneath.

The custom Yamaha XSR 155 was also equipped with a new Japanese Hurricane tracker handlebar with tan-finished handlebar grips from Biltwell. Deus even swapped the stock 17-inch alloy wheels with 18-inch wire-spoke rims shod with chunky Pirelli Scorpion Rally tyres. Given its intended purpose, Deus raised the forks by 20mm while adding oil for stiffness.

Now, with the beefy rubber and for the sheer visual appeal, the box-type swingarm had to go away. Deus handcrafted a tube-type swingarm that was in sync with the industrial design of the bike. That’s not the only part that was built in the old school way. Everything from the fork guards, bash plate, radiator side covers and even the fenders have been crafted by hand, something Indonesia is known for.

Of course, the industrial look won’t reflect if it wasn’t for this paintjob. Deus has done away with the anodised finish on the fork, and given most of the components on the bike an aluminum finish for the rugged appeal. Interestingly, the custom shop has managed to tuck away the wiring better than Yamaha, in spite of having the minimal body cladding. As part of the Yard Build program, Deus was allowed to fiddle with everything except for the fabled Deltabox frame and the 155cc single-cylinder engine that it shares with the Yamaha YZF-R15.

Deus’s Yamaha XSR 155 is surely a garage dream for most of us, however, the Aka-Tombo will not go on sale, and will be a part of the shop’s Temple of Enthusiasm, as a display model.
