At the 2016 World Ducati Week, the Italian bikemaker had given a private preview of its upcoming motorcycle. Despite its best attempt, a blurry picture of the bike was leaked online. The bike in question is the new Ducati SuperSport which according to the two-wheeler giant is a sports bike for the road. It currently has two offerings in the super sports category compromising of the 959 Panigale and the 1299 Panigale. Both the Panigale models are more track focused in their approach and have an aggressive riding stance, the Ducat SuperSport on the other hand has more raised clip-on handlebars which means the riding posture is sporty yet comfortable. Pictures of the bike undergoing testing has surfaced for the first time online and it also confirms that the bike will be offered in two variants – standard and SuperSport S.
The styling of the motorcycle has been inspired from the Panigale but Ducati claims that the body panels are different. The headlight is a redesigned LED unit and so will be the exhaust system and it will get single-sided swingarm unlike the conventional unit as seen on the 959 Panigale. Ducati has also been clever in using parts from its existing portfolio in the new motorcycle. The frame is a trellis unit as seen on the Monster while the motor is based on the 939cc water-cooled L-twin from the Hypermotard. But the motor has been tuned to better suit its new role and it will feature almost 80 per cent new components.
The SuperSport S model will get top-spec Ohlins suspension unit at front and rear along with removable cowl while Brembo units will handle braking duties. The bike will also get an all-digital instrument console which will be compatible with Ducati multimedia system. Electronic goodies like traction control, ride modes and slipper clutch will be offered on the new motorcycle. The Ducati SuperSport will most likely make its debut at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle show in Italy later this year with deliveries commencing by early 2017 in the European markets. The Indian debut of the bike will be most likely by mid-2017 and it will be priced slightly lower than the 959 Panigale and the bikes will come to our shores from Thailand.
