Promotion to a race seat, being able to race with Vettel again and the inaugural Indian GP - di Resta expresses his views on the 2011 season.
After an illustrious career in DTM that saw Paul di Resta finish fifth overall in his first season, only just miss out on the title in the 2008 season and then finish third in 2009, the Scot moved to the Force India F1team as a test and reserve driver for 2010, while still racing in DTM and winning the title last year. With Tonio Liuzzi opting to let go of his race seat in Force India for the 2011 season, di Resta has been promoted to partner Sutil on the race track in the other VJM04 and he knows that it comes in as a big responsibility – especially with the inaugural Indian Grand Prix on the calendar this year. Having raced with reigning F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel back in 2005 and 2006 in the Formula 3 Euro Series and having beaten Vettel to the title in 2006, Paul di Resta is looking forward to racing with the German again – now in Formula 1. But his past accomplishments haven’t disillusioned the young Scot and di Resta is fully aware of the status of the VJM04 and the Force India team. The goal for 2011 is to move up the middle order and with a fantastic start to the season that saw him classified 10th, Paul will be looking on to the new updates soon to hit the car. Having been the team’s test driver, Paul is probably the one who knows the VJM04 the best and is quietly confident of the car’s reliability which he is certain, will convert into a higher points finish for the team in the Championship this year including some podiums probably.
ZigWheels recently met up with Paul di Resta in Mumbai at the ‘Race with Force India’ event at the Hakone Kart Track in Powai and spoke to him about the progress the team has made and his views on a new and ever-important role as the team’s second race driver. Here’s what he had to say:
