  • Likely to continue with existing 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines.

It’s just been a year and a half since the MG Hector’s debut, but the carmaker is already working on a facelift. The updated Hector has now been spotted undisguised ahead of its early-2021 launch, possibly by January.

It gets subtle styling updates, similar to the Hector Plus. For starters, the honeycomb mesh grille now comes with chrome inserts that add a tinge of premiumness. The headlamps, DRLs, and bumpers are the same as the existing model. In profile, the new 5-split-spoke dual-tone alloy wheels, possibly 18-inchers, are the main update. These wheels fill the arches much nicely and give the Hector a better stance. At the rear, the gaudy red plastic trim has been replaced by a more subtle gloss black plastic. These updates give it a breath of fresh air.

The facelifted Hector’s dashboard utilises a lighter beige upholstery and theme that not only looks premium, but also gives it an airier feel. The feature list, however, is likely to be similar to the current car. It features a 10.4-inch infotainment system with connected car tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, an Infinity sound system, ambient lighting, and powered driver’s seat. Safety is covered by six airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and electronic stability control.

We expect the engine options to be similar to the current Hector: a 170PS 2.0-litre diesel engine and a 142PS 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor. A 6-speed manual transmission comes as standard while the dual-clutch automatic transmission is limited to the turbo-petrol engine which is also offered with a 12v mild-hybrid system that aids in torque assist.

The Hector is currently priced from Rs 12.83 lakh (ex-showroom) but the facelifted model could command a slight premium. It will renew its rivalry with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Harrier.
