In today's world, we see carmakers trying to play it safe with their products to make them fit better in society. But, Ford seems to have had it. Don't get us wrong, the company still plans to take on the future with electrics and hybrids, but in an old-school manner. The Ford GT is a prime example, and the carmaker is set to follow it up with the launch of yet another iconic name from the past.
Say hello to the Bronco. Yes, Ford's off-road legend is making a comeback after 22 long years! And to keep matters authentic, it will be built at the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, where the original 1966-1996 models were built. The new Bronco will be part of Ford's lineup in 2020 and is likely to feature a hybrid option as well.
“The Bronco will be a no-compromise midsize 4x4 utility for thrill seekers who want to venture way beyond the city,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of the Americas. That might very well be true. As seen in the 2004 concept, the Bronco will be a boxy and compact 4x4 with two doors. It will be underpinned by the Endeavour/Ranger’s platform and is likely to get a 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol motor from the Ford Ranger pickup range. The silhouette of the teaser image looks awfully close to the 2004 concept, which is set to make an appearance in the upcoming movie ‘Rampage’ featuring The Rock.
But if you’re looking for something a bit more practical and compact, worry not. Ford has also teased a compact SUV (likely to rival the Jeep Compass) which features a much more modern look. Ford hasn’t revealed this SUV's name, the platform it will be based on or the powertrains it is likely to pack. Apart from regular petrol and diesel variants, we expect it to be offered as a hybrid as well. Like the Bronco, this compact SUV will also be a part of Ford's 2020 lineup. After all, Ford is looking to replace 75 percent of its current portfolio and add four new trucks and SUVs.
As far as India is concerned, the Bronco is likely to remain out of reach. That said, there is a slight chance it could be offered as limited edition CBU unit like the Mustang. The other compact SUV could very well come here, albeit at a later stage, possibly in 2025.
