Ford has released teaser images of what looks like the Mustang-inspired full-electric SUV testing in the snow at a spine chilling -26 degree celsius. The carmaker has been testing the SUV in cold weather conditions to dispel the myth that EVs cannot run in the cold. In fact, Ford claims that the upcoming SUV’s battery has been tested at -40 degrees to ensure that they can retain their capacity even under extreme conditions.
While the powertrain details haven’t been revealed yet, reports suggest that Ford might offer it in two variants. The base variant is likely to offer a range of around 450km while a long range variant should provide a range of 600km on a single charge. Reports also suggest that there could be a high performance variant on offer. However, Ford is yet to confirm or deny these rumours.
Visually, the all-electric SUV is expected to borrow plenty of styling cues from the iconic Mustang. Spotted testing with heavy camouflage, we expect elements like the grille and the angry looking headlamps to be carried on here as well. The afterburner like tail lamps are also expected to be present in the all-electric SUV.
The Mustang-based electric SUV is expected to hit showrooms as soon as 2020. Rivals include the recently unveiled Tesla Model Y. But if electric cars aren’t your cup cake, fret not. Reports suggest that this SUV could also be offered with an internal combustion engine. Will it be the Mustang’s rumbling 5.0-litre V8? We hope so.
Ford has invested a huge chunk of money for developing EVs. It has expanded its partnership with German carmaker Volkswagen for the same, and Ford will be the first carmaker outside Volkswagen AG to use the MEB (Modular Electric Toolkit) platform that underpins cars such as the Audi Q4 e-tron concept.
