The automotive world mourns the loss of Osamu Suzuki, Senior Advisor and former Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation. The man behind this iconic brand for four decades passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 94 due to lymphoma. His contributions revolutionised mobility for millions on our shores and earned him India’s third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan in 2007, further cementing him as a key figure in the country’s automotive history. His legacy continues to resonate in the global automotive landscape.

What Did Osamu Suzuki Mean For India?

Osamu Suzuki’s tenure at Suzuki Motor Corporation was marked by transformative milestones, particularly his pivotal role in forging a partnership with Maruti in India. 

 Under his leadership, Suzuki collaborated with the Indian government in 1981-82 to establish Maruti Suzuki, a venture that would revolutionise the Indian automotive industry. This partnership not only made cars more accessible to Indian families but also positioned Maruti Suzuki as a household name synonymous with reliability and affordability.

The iconic Maruti 800, introduced during this collaboration, became a symbol of economic progress for countless Indian households and till date holds an emotional value in the hearts of many Indians.

Known for his visionary leadership and enduring contributions to the automobile industry, Suzuki played a key role in shaping India’s car market through the Japanese brand’s partnership with Maruti, which now holds nearly 40% market share. This iconic collaboration gave us rather iconic nameplates like the Alto, Zen, Swift as well as Wagon R which just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Nevertheless, Maruti Suzuki remains the forerunner brand in India to date.
