Despite the large potential of the Indian automotive market, some manufactures failed to strike a chord with the country’s enthusiasts during the 2015-16 financial year. But they did find a way to keep their operations sustainable in the sub-continent. Here’s a look at the top four…
Nissan

Nissan Motors

One of the largest carmakers in the world, Nissan Motors was unable to replicate the success of its alliance partner Renault in India, with 39,389 units sold domestically during FY16. However, its export figures stood at an impressive 1.11 lakh units in the same period; though still 7.2 percent lower than the FY15 numbers. Overall, Nissan is India’s third highest exporter after Hyundai motors and Maruti Suzuki.

Ford

Ford India

Ford also exported more than its domestic sales, but the gulf between the two numbers was not as large as Nissan. As many as 1.10 lakh units were exported against 79,944 units sold in India. The exports are a staggering 35 percent higher than 81,600 units from FY15; the Ford EcoSport contributing to more than 73,000 units this time around. Ford also exports its Figo hatchback and Figo Aspire compact sedan.

VW

Volkswagen

The German carmaker was in the eye of the storm in the emission scandal that affected its volumes globally. In India too, it experienced a negative growth of nine percent during FY16. However, the exports saw an increase of 17 percent in the same period, from 64,992 units to 75,989 units. The VW Vento mid-sized sedan was the most exported car for the company with 56,738 units exiting the Indian shores.

General Motors

Compensating for its rather lacklustre performance on Indian shores, General Motors registered a phenomenal 1600 percent growth in its exports. Between April 2015 and March 2016, GM exported over 37,000 units, whereas its domestic sales stood at 32,540 units. Under the Chevrolet brand, GM exports only the Beat from India.
