The Bugatti Chiron may have been the most hyped hypercar at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show but the Koenigsegg Regera is no slouch either

Almost exactly a year after the concept dropped at Geneva, Koenigsegg have finally unveiled the production version of the Regera at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. A strictly-limited edition run, the Regera clearly wants a piece of the Bugatti Chiron’s pie. And it does it by adding even more horsepower, courtesy of its hybrid engine, in a car that sends power only to the rear wheels.

Like the new supercar trinity that is the LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder, the Agera is a hybrid. Motive power comes from a 1,100PS 5-litre V8 twin-turbo engine along with three motors — one on each rear wheel and one on the crankshaft — generating the equivalent of an extra 700PS.

0 to 100kmph is achieved in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 200kmph is yours within 6.6 seconds, 0 to 300kmph in 10.9, and Koenigsegg estimates 0 to 400kmph in “under” 20 seconds. The Regera's maximum speed of 410km/h is rpm-limited, and sits just under Bugatti's new max speed of 420 kmph, but Koenigsegg says it's more important who gets to those insane speeds first, not who reaches the highest.

The Regera features Koenigsegg’s ‘Direct Drive’ system in place of any regular transmission. A clutch-slip mechanism uses hydraulic coupling to convert torque at medium to high speeds during acceleration, allowing the engine to gain revs and power. It’s supposed to mimic the feel of downshifting.

The Regera also features a package of comfort and convenience features, including an ‘Autoskin’ function that allows the driver to open all the vehicle’s closures – doors, and front and rear clamshells – via the key fob. The wing mirrors fold automatically as the scissor doors open, and there’s an optional surround-view camera system too. Heated electric seats and Apple CarPlay are part of standard equipment as well.

If images of the Koenigsegg Regera are giving you second thoughts about booking that Chiron, we’ve got some urgent news for you. There are only 80 Regeras being produced, scheduled for delivery this summer, and half of them have already been sold for prices starting at €1.8 million ($2 million).
