In a grand automotive show like Geneva, we always expect to see some over the top creations from manufacturers. Going the extra mile this time is Rolls Royce with its diamond studded Ghost. If you are looking for a big shiny rock on the body in the picture above, you are mistaken. The diamonds are mixed in the paintwork of the car, which make the ‘Rolls-Royce Ghost Elegance’, the first luxury car to have diamond-studded paint finish.
It has been commissioned for an individual collector for whom RR further goes to say, “Just like its owner, the car exudes unapologetic luxury and grandeur.” Umm.. ok. Coming back to the point, this, by far, is the most expensive paint work to ever envelop a Rolls-Royce. A thousand ‘ethically-sourced diamonds’ were ‘subjected to a special process’ to create the ‘Diamond Stardust’, which was sprayed on the top section of the car, the only part of the Ghost to get this finish. It took RR two months to achieve the perfect the texture of the crushed diamonds so as to make them undetectable to touch without compromising on the shine of the diamonds.
Finally, a very fine diamond powder was created which was then mixed into the paint. Also, an extra layer of lacquer was sprayed on top of the paint to protect the diamond particles during the hand-polishing process. This process added an extra two days of paint application by hand and a further day of finishing.
Other details of the Rolls-Royce Ghost Elegance include a Mugello Red pinstripe on the centre of the 21 inch wheels, black leather front seats with accents of Mugello Red stitching on the doors, and piping on the seats, Selby Grey soft leather rear seats with...you guessed it - Mugello Red stitching and piping. Also, inner pockets of the rear doors are lined with a favourite material of the owner; apparently a Grey, Black and Red Tartan.
All in all, this remains an uber luxurious mode of transport, with an added hint of sparkle. The RR Ghost Elegance continues to be propelled by a 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 engine, which takes the car from 0 to 100kmph in 4.9 seconds. Stay tuned for more updates from the Geneva Motor Show.
