If you’ve been waiting on a Geneva Motor Show (GIMS) for the past couple of years, here’s some good news: organisers have revealed the 91st edition of the Swiss show is scheduled to be held from February 19-27, 2022. What’s more, it's on track to have visitors at the venue as well.
2022 will mark the return of GIMS after a two-year gap. It was first cancelled in 2020 following the Swiss Federal Council’s decision disallowing any event with more than 1,000 people until March 15, 2020, to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Failure to host the Swiss show back in 2020 resulted in financial struggles for the 2021 edition. The foundation had requested financial support from the federal council for losses estimated to be up to 11 million Swiss Francs. This was after the council had already approved an earlier loan of 16.8 million Swiss Francs back in June to cover these losses. In the end, organisers had to call off the event as they didn’t see long-term financial stability of the foundation in its current form.
So news of the Geneva Motor Show 2022 being on track brings much-needed positivity for not only the organisers and folks in the automotive industry, but also auto shows around the globe that continue to be under threat of cancellations due to the pandemic.
Sure, it may not be the largest motor show but it's still an important stage for carmakers to showcase their latest tech and new models. It’ll be interesting to see how carmakers manage to present their latest offerings considering the new normal of restricted social interactions and the boom of virtual presentations.
Registrations for exhibitors are open with the organising foundation until mid-July 2021.
