The latest update gives users information about crowded spaces and checkpoints on their route. It can even alert them if their preferred bus, train or metro is overcrowded

Google Maps, one of the most preferred and reliable navigation apps in the world, has rolled a new update that’s related to the current pandemic that has wreaked havoc across the globe.

The updated version of the app can alert users of crowded spaces near them so that they can avoid the risk of being infected. The app will now let you plan your route better and get to your destination safer. The recently added ‘crowdiness’ feature for public transport users has also been simplified and you can now share your opinion on how crowded the public transport system is. Be it a bus, train or the metro.

Public Transport users also benefit from receiving important information and government mandates that could affect how one uses the system. For example, if you need to put on a mask while using a specific mode of public transport, that crucial information will now be displayed on Google Maps. This particular feature is currently available in select countries like Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US).

Private road users also benefit from the new COVID-19 related features on Google Maps. For starters, it will now warn you about COVID-19 checkposts during your journey and the impact you could face. However, this particular feature is limited to the US, Mexico and Canada for now. Another feature that’s limited to select countries is the medical facility guidelines. Let’s say you’re heading to a medical facility, the app will now show info about the facilities guidelines. This ensures that you’re not turned away once you reach the facility and that there’s no additional stress on the healthcare system. This feature is offered in the US, the Philippines, Indonesia, Israel, and South Korea.

It’s worth noting that Google will only post information that has been officially verified to avoid fake news. If you have a smartphone with Android or iOS operating system, all you need to do is update Google Maps via the Play Store or App Store to get the latest features.
