GST Impact On 10 Popular Two-Wheelers

1, Honda Activa 4G

The Honda Activa 4G now has the crown of the highest-selling two-wheeler in India. With the versatility of an automatic scooter and with women buyers coming into the fray, the popularity of the Activa has skyrocketed. So when GST was about to be implemented, many buyers postponed their purchasing decision expecting a great bargain similar to the BS-III discounts. Honda did slash prices for the Activa, but it was only marginal as the popular 110cc scooter is now cheaper by a meagre Rs 442 and now costs Rs 50,730 (ex-showroom-Delhi). 2, Royal Enfield Classic 350

The Royal Enfield Classic 350 has to be among the most aspirational bikes on sale in India with bikers willing to wait for months to get their hands on one. Royal Enfield has slashed the price of the highest selling motorcycle above 200cc in India by Rs 2,015. The Classic 350 was on sale for Rs 1,52,897 but with GST taking effect from July 1, 2017, the bike is now available for Rs 1,50,882 (both prices are ex-showroom, Chennai). 

3, TVS Apache RTR 200

After making enthusiasts wait for many years, TVS finally rode in the Apache RTR 160’s successor in the form of the Apache RTR 200. The wait was worth it as the new TVS Apache RTR 200 received a complete overhaul making it a great option for buyers in the sub-200cc engine category. The bike has been received well by bikers with TVS registering good sales for the same. As far as post-GST price reduction is concerned, the Hosur based manufacturer has slashed the price of the bike by Rs 1,000. The base version of the Apache RTR 200 retails for Rs 92,315 while the Pirelli-tyre version is for Rs 97,915 (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

4, Honda CB Hornet 160R

The Honda CB Hornet 160R has been positively received by two-wheeler buyers in India. Its muscular styling and Honda’s renowned reliability has made it among the highest selling 150cc bikes in India. GST has further aided its cause resulting in a price drop of Rs 724 and the bike now retails for Rs 86,313 (ex-showroom, Delhi). 

5, TVS Jupiter

The TVS Jupiter is among the most popular 110cc scooters on sale in India and the most popular scooter offering from TVS. The Jupiter’s success can be credited to its many segment-first features which made it stand out from the crowd. It still remains the second highest selling scooter in India and the new GST structure has resulted in a minor price drop. The Jupiter was on sale for Rs 49,966, but is now available for Rs 49,766 after a reduction of only Rs 200 in the ex-showroom, Delhi price. 

6, KTM 390 Duke

The KTM 390 Duke redefined the entry-level performance segment in India. Bikers finally had an option of enjoying the thrill of a performance bike without having to rob a bank. The 390 Duke has been on top of its game ever since its launch and despite the fact that competition hasn’t been able to match it, the Austrian bikemaker launched the 2017 390 Duke earlier this year. With GST coming into effect, prices for the 390 Duke have increased by Rs 3,089 in Delhi whereas in Maharashtra, the price has dropped by Rs 5,301. This case is a perfect example of prices increasing or decreasing based on the state of purchase. 

7, Hero Splendor iSmart 110

The Hero Splendor holds the distinction of being the highest selling two-wheeler in India. Its rugged build quality, brilliant fuel economy and low cost of maintenance meant it was the default choice for many first-time bike buyers in India. The Splendor iSmart 110 is the successor to the legendary bike and has been performing well in the Indian market. The new commuter bike is cheaper by Rs 543 post GST and now retails for Rs 55,037 (ex-showroom, Delhi). 

8, Honda CB Shine

The Honda CB Shine is the king of the ring when one talks about 125cc motorcycles. It holds the distinction of being the highest selling 125cc motorcycle in India and also the best seller for Honda in our motorcycle market. The CB Shine offers a good combination of performance, mileage and Honda’s renowned reliability. The base CB Shine used to retail for Rs 56,268 which post GST has gone down by Rs 410 and now stands at Rs 55,858 (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). 

9, Hero Maestro Edge

The Hero Maestro Edge is one of the most popular scooters on sale in India. Hero updated the new scooter with features like external fuel filler cap, multi-function ignition key and pass light switch. Other additions included LED tail lamp, semi-digital instrument console and mobile phone charger. Also the 65.8kmpl mileage makes it one of the most frugal scooters in its segment. The ZX variant of the Maestro Edge used to retail for Rs 51,930 which has gone down by Rs 403 post GST and now stands at Rs 51,528 (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). 

10, KTM RC 200

The KTM RC 200 is one of the most affordable fully faired bikes on sale in India and hence, is a popular choice motorcycle among youngsters. It is among the highest selling motorcycles for KTM and has redefined the entry-level performance segment in India. The RC 200 is a good option for someone looking at a track focussed bike to explore his or her riding potential. The KTM RC 200 earlier retailed for Rs 1,76,526 but with a post-GST drop of Rs 1,729 for Delhi buyers, it now costs Rs 1,74,797. In Maharashtra, the savings are significant as prices for the KTM RC200 have dropped massively by Rs 8,111 and it now retails for Rs 1,73,690 (ex-showroom, Maharashtra).
