[Update: Hero has launched the Xtreme 160R. Know prices and more details here]
Hero MotoCorp has unveiled the Xtreme 160R. It will be Hero’s answer to the 160cc segment and a successor to the now discontinued Xtreme Sports. Here’s everything you need to know about the Xtreme 160R.
Concept to reality:
Hero first showcased the Xtreme 160R in concept form at EICMA last year. The concept motorcycle, which was called the Xtreme 1.R, had quite a few interesting features. A few design elements even made it to the production-spec Xtreme 160R. You can check out the similarities between the Xtreme 1.R concept and the Xtreme 160R here.
Better features than the Xtreme 200R:
The Hero Xtreme 160R not only gets new bodywork but also new features that are missing from even its larger sibling, the Xtreme 200R. For starters, it gets an LED headlamp, LED tail lamp, and LED turn indicators. The Xtreme 200R gets just an LED tail lamp. In comparison to the Xtreme 200R’s semi-digital instrument console, the Xtreme 160R gets a full-digital display. It even gets hazard lamps and Auto Sail technology -- features the Xtreme 200R might get in its BS6 avatar.
Quickest bike in the 160cc segment?
Like the one on the concept motorcycle, the Xtreme 160R gets an air-cooled 160cc motor. This BS6-compliant fuel-injected motor makes 15.2PS at 8500rpm and 14Nm at 6500rpm. Hero claims the Xtreme 160R will accelerate from 0-60kmph in 4.7 seconds and will be the quickest bike in the 160cc segment. It gets what Hero calls Auto Sail technology. This tech bumps up revs at idling speeds preventing engine stalling and allowing for a smooth getaway.
New underpinnings:
The Hero Xtreme 160R does not share its frame with the Xtreme 200R. It uses a new diamond-type single downtube frame with the engine as a stressed member. Suspension setup comprises 37mm forks and a 7-step adjustable monoshock. The Xtreme 160R gets petal-type discs at both ends with a single-channel ABS as standard.
Launch date and pricing:
Hero will launch the Xtreme 160R in March this year. Like the Xtreme 200R, we expect the Xtreme 160R to be the most affordable motorcycle in its segment. It will be available in two variants: rear disc and rear drum. When launched, the Xtreme 160R is expected to be priced around Rs 90,000 to Rs 95,000. It will compete with the Bajaj Pulsar NS160, Honda CB Hornet 160R, Suzuki Gixxer, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, and Yamaha FZ-FI V3.0.
