The Rann of Kutch was one place I have been wanting to go to for a long time and that too during the Rann Utsav. But sadly November-February are hectic months for us motoring scribes not allowing enough free time for ourselves. We had just got an invite from Honda for a drive and I couldn’t have asked for a better time for a travel assignment to come my way. And as luck would have it the destination was Rann of Kutch. After a frantic few weeks in office, this was just what the doctor prescribed.
A flight to Ahmadabad brought me to the starting point of the ‘Discover Amazing India in the Honda Amaze’ drive to the Rann of Kutch. In Ahmadabad we got our hands on the 2015 Honda Amaze that now comes equipped with the same AVN system that the Mobilio sports and comes with Bluetooth connectivity and most importantly a navigation system. And we had just the roads to put it to good use.
The road from Ahmadabad to the Dhordo Tent City at the Rann Utsav was nothing short of brilliant. Smooth roads through and through allowed us to cruise constantly at three-digit speeds which also ensured that the 2015 Honda Amaze returned great efficiency. For someone like us, who was completely alien to the roads of Gujarat, the navigation system was just what we needed to find our way there. After driving for more than 400-odd-kilometres we finally arrived at the Rann Utsav. It was time to top up the tummy and hit the sack; all set for the drive to the salt flats the next morning.
If you want to know how miniscule a part of this earth you are, you need to visit the salt flats in Rann. It’s all white, till your eyes can see. I was simply awed by the sheer magnitude of the salt flats. And despite the sun being at its peak there was a relaxing chill in the wind. Standing in the middle of nowhere surrounded by white salt that stretched into the horizon, I couldn’t help but make a connection with the Bonneville Speed week, wondering why we didn’t have a similar thing here.
Often called the White Desert, the drive on the salt flats was indeed lot of fun. A well sorted suspension setup meant that the Honda Amaze was comfortable even for the passengers at the back. Moreover even when driving on the hard uneven surface, the Amaze offered a decent ride quality. That said, after spending quite some time behind the wheel, the seats were starting to feel a little uncomfortable.
On the third day, before we made our way back to the Bhuj airport, we had just enough time have some fun on the dusty B-town roads enroute. The drive back to the airport was a short and comfortable one. Yes, the ‘Discover Amazing India in the Honda Amaze’ drive to the Rann of Kutch was a welcome change from a very busy work schedule, but like at the end of every trip, this time too I wished I had more time to explore the beauty of the Rann of Kutch.
