Ever since the time Honda announced that it is working on a 160cc offering it created a lot of curiosity among Indian two-wheeler enthusiasts. Many speculated that the new motorcycle will be a premium offering given its higher displacement and would be pitched against the likes of the Suzuki Gixxer and Yamaha FZ-S FI. Pictures of the new bike have been leaked on internet and sadly the new motorcycle isn’t a premium offering as expected. Christened the “Honda CB Unicorn 160” the new bike is expected to be a new variant under the Unicorn family.
The new Honda Unicorn 160 will be Honda’s third offering in the middle-weight segment after the standard Unicorn and CB Trigger. Talking about design, the Honda Unicorn 160 looks like an amalgamation of the Honda CB Trigger and Honda Unicorn. The fuel tank and the headlamp cowl looks inspired from the Honda CB Trigger whereas the seats and tail section have the Honda Unicorn influence. Design highlights that do impress are the LED taillight and the petite saree guard. The Honda Unicorn 160 features an all-digital instrument cluster similar to the CB Trigger. The overall design of the Honda Unicorn 160 is commuterish and sober.
Powering the Honda Unicorn 160 will be a 160cc motor which would be a bored out version of the 149cc mill as found on the Honda CB Trigger. Although details about the power output of the Honda 160 aren’t out we expect it to be marginally higher than that of the CB Trigger. Power will be transferred to the rear-wheel via a heel-n-toe, 5-speed gearbox. It is expected that the Honda Unicorn 160 will feature the patented HET technology for better fuel efficiency.
The Honda Unicorn 160 will most likely make its debut in the Indian two-wheeler market in December 2014. In terms of pricing, the Honda Unicorn 160 will be priced at a slight premium over the CB Trigger and expect it to retail for around Rs 68 to 70,000 (ex-showroom) for the base variant. It will be interesting to note whether Honda prevails with the CB Trigger or replace it with the new Unicorn 160 as sales for the Trigger has been sluggish with respect to its rivals.
