Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is on a roll in the Indian two-wheeler spectrum, registering significant sales growth in the past two years. One of the major reasons for Honda’s momentum is its continued expansion of its manufacturing facilities, which has reduced waiting period and increased sales. The Japanese two-wheeler giant now has expanded its production capacity at Narsapura (near Bengaluru, Karnataka) by 6 lakh units. This makes the Narsapura unit the largest two-wheeler manufacturing plant for Honda globally, with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million units. The new production facility was inaugurated by Shinji Aoyama, Chief Officer - Asia and Oceania Regional Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd.), along with Minoru Kato (President & CEO – Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd) and senior management officials from Honda. Also Read - Honda Shine SP Road Test Review
Speaking at the inauguration, Shinji Aoyama said, “Honda’s two-wheeler business spans more than 120 countries worldwide and India is leading the demand. In 2016-17, India alone contributed 28% to Honda’s global 2Wheeler sales and became the No. 1 contributor to Honda’s two-wheeler business. The growing Indian 2Wheeler market is top priority for Honda. To better meet dynamic market demand and to prepare for the future opportunities, today Honda has inaugurated the fourth assembly line in the Karnataka plant. With this, the Narsapura plant will now produce 24 lac two-wheelers annually. This makes the Narsapura the world’s largest two-wheeler plant for Honda and also India the No. 1 production base for Honda globally.”
India now has become the largest production base of Honda worldwide as its total production capacity now stands at 6.4 million from its four manufacturing facilities throughout the nation. This doesn’t come as a surprise as India is the biggest two-wheeler market for the Japanese two-wheeler giant globally, and the Honda Activa has been the highest selling two-wheeler offering in India for 2017. Honda’s plant in Karnataka has employed close to 22,000 people directly and indirectly.
