Hyundai has launched the i20 Active at a starting price of Rs 6.38 lakh. The i20 Active is the crossover version of the popular Elite i20 premium hatchback and will take on the likes of the Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Fiat Avventura in the cross hatchback segment.
The Active sports a new, more rugged looking front bumper, body cladding and roof rails, skid plates and huge rounded fog lamps to give it that purposeful crosshatch look. The i20 Active also gets 190mm of ground clearance and 16 inch wheels as standard fitment. A chunky set of alloys and different fuel filler cap round off the changes. Interior remains the same but the Active gets new plastic colours and aluminium pedals. The crosshatch also gets cornering lights.
The petrol is still the 83PS, 1.2-litre kappa, four cylinder VTVT engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox and the diesel continues to displace 1.4-litre and develop 90PS of max power. The diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Active runs a shorter final drive compared to the Elite i20. The idea, says Hyundai, was to make the Active feel peppier to give it that sporty feel younger buyers crave for. Hyundai says, it has recorded an 11 per cent improvement in acceleration compared to the regular i20 in the diesel and around 6 per cent in the petrol.
The diesel returns an ARAI rated fuel efficiency figure of 21.19kmpl and the petrol at over 17kmpl is quite efficient too. Hyundai plans to sell 3,000 units of the i20 Active per month, which is more than any competitor in this segment. But considering Hyundai’s reach and the success of the Active’s donor car, it could well be an easy task for the Korean carmaker.
