The Hyundai Tucson has become the first vehicle from its carmaker’s lineup to be tested in the Bharat NCAP crash test, earning an impressive full five-star rating. This premium mid-size SUV, currently on sale in India, has garnered a score of 30.84 out of 32 in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 41 out of 49 in Child Occupant Protection (COP). That said, it has been awarded a perfect 5-star rating in both test cases.
In the next section, we’ll take a detailed look at the crash test results:
Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test Score: 14.84 out of 16
Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test: 16 out of 16
This test replicated a head-on collision at 64 kmph, with 40% of the vehicle’s width striking a deformable barrier. The results revealed excellent protection for both the driver and front passenger, with features such as dual frontal airbags, seat belt pretensioners and load limiters minimizing injuries to the head, chest, and knees. The protection to the driver’s chest and feet were marked as adequate while the rest including the co-passenger’s protection was marked good.
For the profile, the side and curtain airbags, coupled with a strong structural design, offered outstanding protection to critical body regions like the head, chest and pelvis, and hence was marked as good. However, any comments on the bodyshell and footwell stability are missing from the fact sheet.
The Hyundai Tucson has delivered an excellent performance in the Child Occupant Protection with a perfect 24/24 in the dynamic tests. The vehicle also scored 12/12 for child restraint system (CRS) installation compatibility, ensuring a secure fit for child seats. An additional 5/13 was awarded for vehicle assessment parameters.
Both the 18-month-old and 3-year-old child dummies were tested using seats with ISOFIX mounts in a rearward-facing position, and they received good protection during the test showcasing optimal safety for young passengers.
The safety suite of the Hyundai Tucson is well equipped with essential safety features like 6 airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold control, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), rearview camera with both front and rear parking sensors and level-2 ADAS.
It offers two engine options: a 2-litre petrol engine producing 156 PS and 192 Nm of torque, and a 2-litre diesel engine delivering 186 PS and an impressive 416 Nm of torque. The petrol variant is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The current Hyundai Tucson on sale in India asks for a price ranging between Rs 29.02 lakh and Rs 35.94 lakh (ex-showroom). It is sold in two broad variants: Platinum and Signature. The couple of its existing rivals include the Citroen C5 Aircross, Jeep Compass and Volkswagen Tiguan.
